How we choose the best NBN plans

Mobile phone and internet plans are our focus at WhistleOut, so we put a lot of thought into how we judge these awards.

We know that there is no one perfect NBN plan, so we split up our recommendations into three categories: Best Budget NBN Plans, Best Unlimited Data Plans, and Best Premium NBN Plans.

Price and data are obviously major focuses for choosing the plans we like, but we go deeper than the headline prices and look for value over the long term. We also consider setup costs, which can be considerable.

Best NBN Basic plan

We often refer to NBN 12 plans as the 'slowest' NBN plans, but in truth, these are not slow plans. In fact, an NBN 12 plan should deliver better speeds than most of us have experienced with ADSL services in the past. With 12Mbps you can happily stream video, listen to music and podcasts, all while browsing the web and chatting with friends.

Teleron
Teleron
  • 100GB Bronze (Promo)
  • 100GB NBN Fixed Line
  • $42.50/mth
  • Min. cost $92.50

While many folks lean towards unlimited data plans, the 100GB in this Teleron plan should be more than enough for most households for day-to-day web surfing. For a limited time, they are offering unlimited Netflix streaming and data-free iTunes downloads for new customers.

Opting for this plan will save you about $10 per month compared with unlimited data options. You can save on set-up fee, if your preference is a 24-month agreement.

If you're looking for a step up in speed from an old ADSL connection, but you'd like to keep costs down, then an NBN 25 plan would be a good option to consider.

The included 25Mbps should offer a noticeable improvement in performance, but you should only need to add about $10 to what you currently pay for a similar ADSL plan.

Mate is one of the newer internet providers offering the NBN, and this plan is great value and a worthy consideration for those who value strong customer service. For a limited time, they are running a promotion, if you sign up to this plan, your 2nd month plan fee will be waived off.

NBN 50 plans are often overlooked, and in fact, a number of providers don't bother selling NBN 50 plans at all. We think this is a shame given what an excellent middle ground NBN 50 is, in terms of download and upload speeds.
