The number of Australians with access to a Netflix subscription has grown significant between May and June, with 1.42-million Aussies estimated to live in a household watching the streaming TV service.

Industry analysts Roy Morgan Research is keeping a close eye on the progress on the U.S. internet TV provider, and now estimates that 559,000 homes across Australia are plugging in to the service, or 6.1% of all households in the country.

This is a huge jump from Roy Morgan’s May numbers which estimated that Netflix was in 408,000 homes and reaching just over 1-million Aussie eyeballs.

Unmetered access to Netflix offered by the iiNet family of providers and Optus is having a big impact on who is choosing the service, with 16.8% of iiNet customers signing on, and 11.7% of Optus customers, though Telstra has the most Netflix subscribers overall.

The iiNet family consists of service providers iiNet, Internode, Westnet, and Adam and all don’t count Netflix related data against customers monthly data allowance.

Considering how much data the Netflix service can use, these unmetered deals are essential for households who want to keep their broadband bills low and still enjoy everything Netflix has to offer.

According to Mumbrella, the partnership between Netflix and Optus is due for renewal, and it is safe to safe that Optus will be working hard to maintain this advantage. This might be made difficult by rumours that Telstra and Vodafone are looking to offer customers Netflix in some form or another.

Telstra currently offers its customers a 6-month subscription to both Stan and Presto, both rival services of Netflix. Vodafone has bundled a 6-month subscription to Stan for its mobile customers, but neither provider offer unmetered data.
