Telstra is set to enter the low-cost mobile market with the upcoming launch of Belong Mobile, an expansion of its discount broadband brand. Belong currently represents 5% of Telstra's fixed-line broadband business, and the company is hoping to use the brand to go after more price conscious customers without affecting its "premium" image.
Telstra has yet to confirm when it will start selling plans through Belong Mobile or how much they will cost, but said it will provide more details "shortly".
If you're after Telstra network access for a more competitive price, you don't need to wait for Belong Mobile to go live. MVNOs including Woolworths Mobile, Aldi Mobile, and Boost all currently resell Telstra services and tend to offer more competitive deals than Telstra itself.
While Telstra MVNOs don't have access to Telstra's entire network - 4GX speeds are reserved for Telstra's direct customers - we wouldn't be surprised if this were also the case with Belong Mobile.
Telstra's 4GX network can offer much faster speeds than its standard 4G network, but this comes down to a case of ultra-fast versus super-fast. Compatible devices can attain real world speeds of over 300Mbps in 4GX areas, while 4G speeds max out around 50Mbps.
