Nomophobia taking over Australia says Huawei

The old ball and chain

28% of Australians say that leaving their smartphone at home has the potential to ruin their day, according to research commissioned by smartphone manufacturer Huawei. In a survey of 1,021 Australians, the company found the following:

  • 96% of respondents carry their phone at all times
  • 29% said their phone distracts them from their partner, children, or friends
  • 26% don't feel like themselves without their smartphone
  • 24% admit that their phone has caused an argument between themselves and their partner
  • 24% said they would feel anxious about missing key moments in the lives of their friends and family without their phone on them

Huawei's research also found that a number of Australians would consider being late to important events in order to retrieve a smartphone they left at home or work. 45% would be late to meet a partner, 44% would be late to a birthday party, 34% would be late to a date, and 25% would be late to a birthday.

Yay, smartphones make us terrible people.

The survey comes off the back of the Australian launch of the Huawei Watch 2, the first 4G smartwatch to launch locally. If you pop a SIM card into your Watch 2, you're still able to receive texts and calls on the go without the need for your smartphone, and check on all important apps like Facebook Messenger.

I'd still be a bad person and run home for my phone, though.
