It might only happen once or twice a year, but Telstra is currently running a killer deal on bring-your-own device phone plans. $50 per month gets you 12GB of data, unlimited talk and text, and unlimited international talk and text on a 12-month contract. You'll also get a bonus six-month Apple Music subscription, provided you haven't used the offer before.
While you can get a similar deal for less on other telcos - Optus will do 15GB for $40 on a 12-month contract, and Amaysim will do 10GB for $40 on a 28-day recharge - the extra dosh you're spending gets you access to Telstra's fancy 4GX network. While Telstra technically only covers 1% more of the population than Optus, coverage maps show that difference is bigger than you may think.
If you want a cheaper SIM only deal from Telstra, you can pay $40 per month for 5GB of data, unlimited text, and $1,000 of talk. This is also on a 12-month contract.
There are two slight catches when it comes to Telstra's new SIM-only deals. They're both available online only, and your support options are slightly more limited. While Telstra customers normally have access to in-store and call centre support, you'll only have access to live chat on these two SIM-only plans.
For what it's worth, we've found Telstra's live chat tends to be a faster option than actually making a call.
Telstra is running these deals until September 4. Telstra's full range of SIM only plans is below:
