HTC U11 on sale from June 5

HTC's latest flagship smartphone - the U11 - will be available from Australian retailers and telcos starting from June 5. JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Optus, and Virgin will all have the phone on day one, and Telstra will be ranging the U11 from July 4.

Outright, the U11 will set you back $999. The full range of U11 plans has yet to be confirmed, but Optus' hero plan is $85 per month option with 10GB of data, and unlimited talk and text. Virgin will offer the U11 for $65 per month, with 4GB of data. Telstra has yet to confirm any of its U11 plans.

At $999, the U11 is the cheapest flagship device has launched in years. HTC's last three high-end phones all came with four-digit price tags.

The U11's key new feature is "Edge Sense", which ostensibly lets you squeeze the phone to trigger an action. There's haptics sensors embedded in the bottom half of the aluminum frame, and these can differentiate between a long squeeze and a short squeeze. Out of the box, a short squeeze will open up the camera. Long squeeze is off by default. Both gestures can be customised to open almost any app, launch Google Assistant, or toggle select quick settings.

Other notable inclusions include IP67 water-resistance and a 12MP rear-facing camera which sensor quality tester DxOMark has given its top-score to date. It his however worth noting that DxOMark's tests specifically look at sensor quality, rather than real world usage. We've spent quite a bit of time taking photos with the U11 though, and the results have been promising.

Other key specifications include a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, a 16MP selfie camera, a front-facing fingerprint reader, and a 3,000mAh battery. The U11 runs a lightly customised version of Android Nougat.
