Moto X4

After a short absence, Motorola has revived its X series of smartphones with the Moto X4. Based on its specifications, the Moto X4 is ostensibly a midrange phone with high-end features; you get two rear-facing cameras, a Gorilla Glass 4 front and back, and IP68 water-resistance.

The Moto X4 is the first Motorola Android smartphone to be certified anything higher than "splash-proof" when it comes to water-resistance. The IP68 rating means you're able to submerge the Moto X4 as deep as 1.5 metres for up to half an hour.

In terms of cameras, the primary rear-facing camera is a standard 12MP shooter. The secondary camera is an 8MP wide-angle lens with a 120-degree field of view, ostensibly letting you "zoom out".

Other key specifications include a 5.2-inch 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, either 3GB and 4GB of RAM, either 32GB or 64GB of storage, and a 3000mAh battery. It runs a mostly unmodified version of Android 7.1 Nougat and will almost certainly see an upgrade to Oreo.

The Moto X4 will launch internationally in September for €399. Locally, this converts to approximately to $600. Motorola has yet to confirm Australian pricing or availability, but the company's local arm tends not to comment on phone releases until a couple of days before they're about to hit shelves.

At a price of around $600, the Moto X4 would compete directly with Motorola's other new midrange phone, the $699 Moto Z2 Play. The Moto Z2 Play has similar hardware, a slightly larger display, and support for the Moto Mods accessory family. The Moto X4 drops Moto Mod support for features such as water-resistance.
