Motorola clearly believes that good things come in threes, with the company today announcing the imminent Australia release of a trio of new Android smartphones. The Moto X4, Moto G5S, and Moto G5S Plus will be available from local retailer from tomorrow, with prices ranging from $349 to $699.
The Moto X4 is essentially a midrange phone with high-end features; you get two rear-facing cameras, a Gorilla Glass 3 front and back, and IP68 water-resistance. The Moto X4 is actually the first Motorola Android smartphone to be certified anything higher than "splash-proof" when it comes to water-resistance. The IP68 rating means you're able to submerge the Moto X4 as deep as 1.5 metres for up to half an hour.
Other key specifications include a 5.2-inch 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 3000mAh battery. It runs a mostly unmodified version of Android 7.1 Nougat and should see an upgrade to Oreo before the end of the year.
The Moto X4 will set you back $699, and you'll be able to get it through JB Hi-Fi or online through Motorola. You'll have a choice of "super black" or a "sterling blue".
The Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus are the successors to the G5 family Motorola launched around six months ago. While neither new phone is overly different from its earlier iteration, there a couple of key changes.
The Moto G5S Plus is a little larger than the G5 Plus, rocking a 5.5-inch display. As with the Moto X4, the Moto G5S Plus has a second rear-facing camera, which can be used to simulate DSLR-like bokeh. Both rear-facing cameras are 13MP.
The Moto G5S is also a little larger than the G5, going up from 5-inches to 5.2-inches. The camera is now 16MP, and the body is now all an all-metal unibody body. This does however mean the battery isn't removable anymore.
Key specifications for the Moto G5S Plus include a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a Snapdragon 625 processor, either 3GB or 4GB of RAM, up to 32GB of expandable storage, and a 3,000mAh battery.
Key specifications for the Moto G5S include a 5.2-inch 1080p display, a Snapdragon 430 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, and a 3,000mAh battery.
In terms of pricing, the Moto G5S will retail for $349, the 3GB Moto G5S Plus will go for $429, while the 4GB Moto G5S Plus model will be $459. They'll be available through JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Harvey Norman, Officeworks, and Motorola's online store. JB Hi-Fi will only be ranging the Moto G5S, while the 4GB Moto G5S Plus will be exclusively available through Motorola's online store.
Following the launch of the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus, Motorola says it will discontinue the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus. A spokesperson did however note that we can expect to see run out on specials on the two older devices.
Motorola will also launch two new Moto Mods locally: a 360-degree camera and a GamePad. These Mods are compatible with all existing Z series smartphones - such as the recently launched Moto Z2 Play - and will retail for $369 and $139 respectively.
