Samsung Galaxy Note 8

While leaks and rumours might have stolen some of Samsung's thunder, the Galaxy Note 8 is now official and set to go on sale on September 22 for $1499.

As expected, the Note 8 is essentially a larger version of the Galaxy S8+ with a few additional features. The screen is 6.3-inches rather than 6.2-inches, and there's a second rear-facing camera, and the S Pen is back.

The Note 8 has a huge 6.3-inch display, which is the largest we've seen in any mainline Samsung smartphone. Much like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, the Note 8 has what Samsung refers to an "infinity display" with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio.

Top and bottom bezels have been reduced dramatically to accommodate the elongated display, while its sides taper off to create the illusion of edge-to-edge. Essentially, it's a big screen in a smaller package than you'd expect.

As is becoming increasingly common among flagship smartphones, the Note 8 has two rear-facing cameras. It uses the second rear-facing camera - a telephone lens - to simulate 2x optical zoom. You're also able to use these two lenses in tandem to simulate shallow depth of field.

Both rear-facing cameras have optical image stabilisation, which Samsung says is an industry first. The standard lens has an aperture of f/1.7, while the telephoto lens has an aperture of f/2.4. This means the standard lens will have an edge over the telephoto lens when it comes to lowlight photography.

The S Pen stylus is back, and it hasn't changed much from the Note 7; there's still 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and its water-resistant. The key new S Pen related improvement is a software feature called Live Message, which lets you create shareable GIFs that play your writing back in real time.

Samsung has brought back "Screen-off Memo", a feature that lets you take notes on the Note's display, even when the screen is asleep, and now lets you write up to 100 pages of notes in this mode.

Other key specifications for the Galaxy Note 8 include an Exynos 8895 processor, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, IP68 water-resistance, and a 3300mAh battery. 128GB and 256GB models will be available overseas, but we won't see these in Australia, at least at launch. And in case you're wondering, the headphone jack is still there.

Note 8 pre-orders start on August 25 at 12:01am from the usual suspects: Samsung, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Optus, Virgin, Vodafone, and Amaysim. Telstra won't start pre-orders until September 5. If you get your pre-order in before the end of September 21, you'll net yourself a bonus wireless charger worth $119. You'll be able to get in a choice of black or gold.

If you purchase the Note 8 before October 31 (and register by November 14), Samsung will provide one free screen repair that you can use within your first 12 months of ownership.
